This series of painted ceramic plates and bowls were based off of famous Renaissance paintings of the Catholic saints, the Mother Mary, and Jesus. They were used in an altar to death, taking these symbols of faith and the hope for eternal life and turning them into reminders of life's mortality.

Majolica ceramic
Rachel Demers' ceramic style is based on a classical Italian technique called Majolica. This style uses a tin based white glaze and a series of colored stains and underglazes to create intricate and bright designs. Rachel is more interested in Renaissance styles majolica rather than the more modern and simplified pieces made in Italy today.
In addition to her Italian Majolica work, Rachel Demers creates other ceramic based art. She focuses a lot on sculpting the human face and figure, much like in her sculptural work. Rachel has also dabbled in ancient latin american ceramic styles and she also enjoys making ceramic baskets.

Working in a large range of materials including charcoal, pastel, graphite, and ink, Rachel Demers' collection of drawings encompasses the breadth of her work. When she first started creating a large majority of her work was drawing based and that has continued even today. Rachel believes that all good work first originates as a drawing, be it a simple sketch or a fully complete image.
Her drawings are not constricted by any one style. When drawing Rachel feels free to experiment and try new materials and different approaches. Looking at her work you will find anything from realism to abstract line-work. As she has progressed her drawings have grown larger, now most are either life size or a little smaller.
Rachel Demers works in both acrylic and oil paints. She specializes in landscape and figure painting. Much like in her drawings, she uses this medium as a way to experiment in both styles and subjects.
This series of work was done using a base of wet charcoal sketches covered with oil sticks on butcher paper. This style combines the art of drawing with oil painting.
